EXCELLENT LISTENING

I have found that the more a class talks about "excellent listening," continuing to refine their working definition, the more likely they are to be "excellent listeners."  Excellent listening also requires daily practice.

This activity is designed to elicit thoughts and feelings about the topic of excellent listening.

Supplies Required:  Chart paper and felt-tip markers

Prepare the paper ahead of time or have the class title and divide the paper as such:

EXCELLENT LISTENING...

Looks Like... Sounds Like... Feels Like...

This can be done as a whole class brainstorming session, with the teacher recording the class' responses.  Class members can also record their own ideas on post-its and add them to the chart.  The brainstorming could also be done in small groups.

Post the chart where it can be seen and refer to it often.  Add ideas as they are observed by the teacher or members of the class.  Ask class visitors (principal, custodian, parents) to add their ideas as well.

As a homework assignment -- have your class interview their parents and siblings about excellent listening and add that data to the chart.
